About our
Oregon Wool Growers Association
Who We Are
The Oregon Wool Growers Association (OWGA) was created in 2003 and held its first meeting in June of 2004. It is a registered mutual benefit corporation in the state of Oregon. Our purpose is the promotion of goods marketed directly to the public by Oregon farms raising fiber animals. Our primary tool in this endeavor is this website (OregonWool.com).
We are a membership organization and have member farms from all over the state. Any farm in Oregon raising wool or dual-purpose sheep, fiber goats, angora rabbits, alpacas, or llamas may join the OWGA. Every farm member may post products on this website.
The climate and geography of our state varies from maritime to temperate to high desert. We are a region of mountain ranges and river valleys. Some of our trees grow immensely tall, while others are twisted and flattened by wind. The spring grass of the western areas grows head high, then disappears in the summer drought. The eastern area varies from chapparal to verdant river valleys to alpine peaks and more. We hope the products from the smaller farms in our state reflect some of the aspects of our climate and geography. Perhaps you will detect the essence of sage or myrtle, the voice of the olive-sided flycatcher, or the soughing of wind through pine boughs.
The farm members of the OWGA are a diverse, eccentric group tenaciously tending their flocks despite the development of inexpensive synthetic fibers and agribusiness. These farmers live on their spot of Earth with their animals, protecting them, grooming them, showing them, shearing them, delivering them, doctoring them, and being sustained by them. We think this life of mutual reliance and respect shows in the quality of the products we offer.
